what is it with men and camping?
As a persona with a passionate love of the Outdoors (I have made it my profession I'm an Outdoor education teacher). I think Men are simply not alive in the domesticated urban world. If you really want answers to this questions I would reffer you at a book which has radically inspired my faith and I suggest every Christian man should read, called "Wild at Heart: discovering the secrets of a mans soul" by John Elderigde.
Men are explorers they seek adventure and risk. The current culture and environment of our society we live in simply denys them of this so is it any wonder they seek the natural world, bush and outdoors for an outlet to explore this. John Muir the great adventurer put it well "I went out for a walk and realised that I real traveled in"
Hope this helps. The outdoors is my passion and a powerful tool that God is teaching me to use to its full.
Cheers
Bretto
maybe we have an innate sense of being cave men ,personally I enjoy getting out and ruffing it [to some degree] getting away from the hustle & bustle and really appreciate the faaaantastic nature God has given us but we so often forget about . There are so many great spots out there camping is a great way to see more of them and live simply .
But its probably mostly that you can be a grub and its all good !
Mmm,
Shower in a can
Digging pit toilets
Cooking over an open fire
The food is simple but tasty
No TV, no computer, no phone, no radio... God is everywhere, but you can hear Him more clearly when there aren't other things shouting in your ear.
What's there not to like about camping? I'm not obsessed with it, but when my friends invite me, I'm there!
Hi Leonie, as the first "chick" to reply I think all of the above answers are great, but from a girls perspective I would be the first to agree about it not really being relaxing if you think of the setting up and clearing out which I might add guys is usually done by the girls. If I could go camping and know that it was an equally shared chore then I might be persuaded, but think about sitting in a gorgeous spa, glass of bubbly in hand, great friends, a view to the ocean and the option of a great massage by the inhouse massuese......ahhhhhhh Or then again digging a great big hole so you can go to the bathroom...hmmm what to do??????????????
Camping gives you an opportunity to go out into the wild, forget about stress and responsibility, sleeping under the stars, sitting around a fire till early morning, just you and your mates, no chicks, going out and catching snakes, drinking beer, canoeing. It's the closest to heaven you can get without leaving earth.
Hey Michelle,
Not sure who you go camping with, but would you mind coming with us next time? :D (Just kidding)
Every time I've gone camping, us guys have set up the tent, while the girls sort out all the food and other equipment out of the car. I'd say it's been fairly distributed. But I guess it depends on who you go with
Thanks guys I was just trying to compare the two things that Leonie brought up she said 5star hotel or camping. No i am not a multimillionaire in actual fact if it was myself on holiday it would consist of a tent, some sleeping bags and my three young children, i guess right this minute we could afford to stay..oh..maybe..in our BACKYARD! Luckily we live in the bush anyway so there you go. And can I also add, i do love camping but I thought we were talking theoretically.
I used to do a lot of hiking (Real camping) where all you had is what you could carry, you would be gone for 3-5 days in the middle of no-where. Usually I had 1 spare set of cloths to last that time which was mainly for it I got soked (which has happened a couple of times). Almost all the places you hike you need to carry water in for the entire time, so that leaves you will little room for any luxuries!
I've also stayed in a lot of resorts (my previous job sent me on a lot of conferences around Australia where I was usually put up in 4and a half or 5 star resorts) and whilst I love staying at the resorts and I always enjoy my time there, the hiking is so much more memorible and thinking about it now, I miss the hiking much more than the resorts...
I have sooo many stories from my days in the bush!
I noticed this hasnt been replied to in a good while and I couldnt resist but say: whats wrong with camping? ok, not every ones cup of tea although theres nothing nicer than a good cooked hearty meal in one of those camp ovens (i've done it lots of times) and a nice fire for later in the night. I see that as rather romantic actually....You can still have that candlelight dinner! What did they do before 5-star hotels came along.. probably camping.. haha. oh well!! as good ol Ernie Dingo would say, "come on!! get out there".. hava good weekend... Yes God did make man in His own image... I reckon God would say amen to camping!!... blessya
Well Im replying toooo
Wel I camp alot with the kids...
Forget 5 star too expensive whoever said that they obviously not on a budget..
See nature
Se e the stars
cook spuds and marshmelllows
I love it
Bye for now
I think Brett answered it the best!
Wild At Heart!....what a book. It has helped me understand WHY I do what I do!
It's simple. It's the way God created us. He created men to live in the wild. To hunt for our food, kill it and cook it. (Yes, after the fall....) Most of us, if not all..., have that in our hearts. The taste for the wild. The thrill of the kill. The action, the adventure, the 'no boundaries' mentality.
While I enjoy a good 5 star hotel, the wild still has its calling in me. I know you girls may not like it, but hey, that's why we created the kitchen sink!
(KIDDING!!!!!)
Forget the camping!! I'm with you Michelle. Give me the 5 star accommodation with the MANDATORY spa, enjoying a great red wine with good company. I get enough of dodging snakes when i bushwalk, so i have have no "blokey desire" to pitch a tent & go out & catch snakes etc...
So Michelle, when are we going!!LOL!!
i am curious guys, what is it with men and camping?
what is wrong with 5 star hotels or at least a cosy cabin. But noooo, you have to be out there, roughing it, with the spiders, snakes and pit toilets. why did God make you like this?????
