Calling for overseas helpers
For the 2000 children from the orphanage at the Indian Christian Mission Centre (ICMC) seeing the friendly faces of Australian representatives of the ICMC brings them a new lease of life.
Over the last four years teams of Australian representatives of the Indian Christian Mission Centre (ICMC) have been visiting the orphanage to assist with teaching, conducting feeding programs in the villages and providing lunches for people with leprosy.
Springfield resident Marty Isaac who is a member of the international board of directors for the ICMC and a regular visitor to the region said most of the children don’t have family members so having contact with adults is a big part of what we do.
“The next trip is scheduled for December with more to follow in 2011. Participants will spend one-on-one time with the children, teach at the schools, help out with Christmas day lunch where all 2000 children are brought together to celebrate and assist in distributing the children’s presents that is a new piece of clothing for every child.
“Next year we are planning to take between five and ten teams and aside from visiting the ICMC orphanage, we will work the locals in smaller villages around India, dig wells, build schools and medical clinics and we welcome anyone who wishes to come along and help.
“Not only do you help the children, but you engage in a life changing experience. Our trips certainly opens one’s eyes to what else is happening in the world; making us fully appreciate what we have here in Australia,” said Mr Isaac.
Approximately 50 percent of the children are orphans. Some might have one parent alive while others just have grandparents or extended family. There are also children of people that have been imprisoned and of people suffering with leprosy.
